Tryout Information
SOUTH LYON STARS POM PON GUIDELINES
THE FOLLOWING GUIDELINES WILL APPLY TO MEMBERS FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR; THE COACHES RESERVE THE RIGHT TO MAKE ALL FINAL DECISIONS ON ANY SITUATION THAT MAY ARISE.
To tryout for the team, you must live in the South Lyon/New Hudson School District area. You do not need to attend SL Schools. Private Schools are welcome.
RULES & REGULATIONS:
1. ATTENDANCE
Each member must attend all scheduled practices. The only excuse for not attending is illness. If you are ill more than 2 days, you must have a note from a doctor. Each girl is given 2 personal days. Personal days must be approved in advance and may not be used 2 weeks before any performance or competition. Coach must be informed when an absence is going to occur prior to the absence. Only the coach can excuse them from a practice or game. Extreme family emergencies will also be excused, such as death, funeral, or hospitalization.
Any absence not approved prior to the practice will be determined “unexcused.” This will result in being pulled from the next performance.
Tardiness - If you are tardy 2 times in one week, you will be pulled from the next performance. If you are going to be more than 5 minutes late, you MUST contact your coach. Coaches must know where the girls are during practice times. It is for their safety and liability reasons.
We try to work around choir concerts in the fall especially.
1.1 PRACTICE
Practice will begin with a 2-day camp on August 13th and 14th from 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM at the Church of Christ in South Lyon (Camp is no additional cost). Evening practices will begin on August 18th, with sessions on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM. There will be no practice on September 5th. The fall season will run from August 13th to October 21st.
2. PERFORMANCES
All members are required to participate in all performances unless excused BY THE COACH. If you are injured, you are still expected to attend the performance in uniform. The full uniform, worn to performances, consists of a top, spanks, skirt, ankle socks, and shoes.
We LOVE for the girls to perform as much as possible! We will perform at some local sporting events and team up with the local high school pom pon teams for an event or two. We will also perform at South Lyon East and South Lyon H.S. JV or freshman football games (Thursdays).
We will also perform in the South Lyon Pumpkinfest Parade. Pumpkinfest for 2025 will be on September27th
3. PARTIES
We will have a few team parties. Always looking for parents to help!

-

4. UNIFORM
Each pommer will need to purchase their own uniform and poms through the South Lyon Stars. Uniforms can be used year after year, as long as the coach approves the condition. Uniforms for 2024 include a shirt, skirt, and bow ($250). Black cougars, used throughout the year, will also need to be purchased for $42.00 at Mid American Pom Pon. You must also purchase 3 practice shirts and a set of poms.
Warm-ups and duffle bags will be offered to all pommers but will ONLY be required if you make the competition team.
Old team members can purchase uniform items separately.
5. MISCELLANEOUS
Each team member needs to obey all rules while on school property or at any school activity. This applies to any school. In the event that the violation is not specified, the coach will make the final decision.
NO phones are allowed at practice. Phones may be placed with the ringer off in your bag or will be collected by the coach at the beginning of practice. If you need to get ahold of your child during practice, please contact the coach. Issues with phone use during practice can result in removal from the team.
NO Food. Food is not allowed at practice. Only water or sports drinks. No coffee, no slushy. NO FOOD. We are not allowed to have food in the school gyms. Violation of this will result in removal from the team.
SOUTH LYON STARS POM HAS A “ZERO TOLERANCE” POLICY FOR ALCOHOL, SMOKING AND/OR DRUG USE. THIS APPLIES TO ALL MEMBERS.
6. SELF-REFERRAL
A student seeking assistance from a school employee, coach, or independently seeking outside professional help for alcohol/drug use will not be removed from the team. A student may self-refer only one time per season.
7. TRY-OUTS
Each pommer must try out for each new season. No spot will be guaranteed, and behavior issues will be noted for the next season.
Scores will not be revealed, but the coach can discuss what areas to improve for the next season's tryout. The scoring process is unbiased and is conducted by multiple judges that are invited by the coaches. Coaches’ decisions are FINAL.
Tryouts are closed. This means that no one except for the judges and pommer(s) are allowed in the room while tryouts are in progress.
Tryouts for the competitive competition team will take place in late October. Only current year fall football season members may try out for competition season. If you make the competition team, there will be practices over Holiday Break, and these practices are MANDATORY. You may not miss. Please consider this when trying out for the competition team. We will also have Saturday practices during competition season. Competition team information will be sent out in late fall. Being on the fall team does not guarantee you a spot for the competition team. You must try out. Alternate positions may also be offered to individuals who are not quite ready for competition, but we see great potential.
